Anna Sortun Elected Managing Partner of Tonkon Torp
Oregon
Tonkon Torp litigation partner Anna Sortun has been elected Managing Partner of the firm, effective July 1, 2025. Sortun succeeds Kurt Ruttum, who has held the role since 2020.
Sortun has a litigation practice with a focus on shareholder disputes, complex torts, and contract matters. She’s been recognized as a top Oregon trial practitioner by several legal publications, including Chambers USA. The Portland Business Journal named her a 2024 “Woman of Influence” in recognition of her industry leadership and substantial community and pro bono efforts.
“I’m incredibly honored to help lead Tonkon Torp into its next chapter. After spending my entire legal career here, it’s a privilege to take on this role,” said Sortun. “This is an exciting time for the firm,” added Sortun. “We recently celebrated our 50-year mark and we just moved into a beautiful new office space – to recommit to our downtown Portland home and give us room to grow. Our talented lawyers are leading some of the most complex and interesting legal matters in the Northwest. There is so much to be proud of. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
Sortun has been a member of Tonkon Torp’s Managing Board since 2023, and previously served as Co-Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. She joined the firm as an associate in 2005 following a clerkship at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and was promoted to partner in 2014. She is a graduate of University of Oregon School of Law, where she was editor-in-chief of the law review.
Kurt Ruttum commented, “Anna cares deeply about this firm, Portland, and the Northwest business community. I have no doubt our firm will flourish under her leadership.”
Kurt Ruttum’s tenure as Managing Partner was marked by leading Tonkon Torp out of the pandemic and keeping the firm stable during the subsequent years of economic uncertainty. Ruttum also played a key role in the firm’s relocation in June 2025 to the Wells Fargo Center, its first new office space in 35 years. Ruttum will continue to work as a partner in Tonkon Torp’s Business Department and M&A, Financial Services, and Corporate Finance practice groups.
“Kurt was a steady hand for our firm and community. We are all so grateful for his business-minded leadership, which helped us thrive during a challenging time,” said Sortun.
