RICHMOND, Va. (July 7, 2021) – Sands Anderson PC today announced Megan Lisa Watkins has joined the Firm as Counsel. An experienced education law attorney, Watkins advises public school divisions and school boards on an array of matters from special education to student disciplinary issues. She will be based in Sands Anderson’s Richmond office and will be a member of the firm’s School & Education Law Team.

“Megan is the perfect addition to our Government Group and growing School & Education Law Team,” said firm president Margaret Hardy. “Her overarching education law experience, developed through her in-house role as well as her work as a high school teacher and child advocate, will be of great value to our school clients.”

A substantial part of Watkins’s practice is focused on special education law and extends to student discipline, alternative education and language access issues. She regularly counsels school divisions regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the American with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Watkins also has broad experience in general education law, supporting school administrators and school boards with a wide range of student matters.

Watkins joins Sands Anderson’s leading School & Education Law Team. The team has expanded rapidly in the past 18 months with the addition of Wade T. Anderson, Patrick T. Andriano, Jason H. Ballum, Anne E, Mickey, and LaRana J. Owens. The School & Education Law Team is the largest group of attorneys dedicated to education law  issues in the Commonwealth and its members collectively have more than 100 years of experience representing the legal interests of public school boards.

Watkins previously worked as Assistant County Attorney in Henrico County and served as Counsel to the Henrico County School Board. Prior to that position, she provided direct legal representation to students in the greater-Richmond and Petersburg areas with the JustChildren Program of the Legal Aid Justice Center.
