PORTLAND, Ore. (November 1, 2023) Tonkon Torp is pleased to announce the launch of the Government Law & Disputes Practice GroupMaureen McGee and litigator Danny Newman will Co-Chair the group, which brings together a team of accomplished lawyers with political experience and the proven ability to navigate complex state and local legislative, administrative, and regulatory issues through policy development, lobbying, litigation, and counseling.

The Government Law & Disputes Practice Group is tailor-made to support clients in all of their interactions with government, including while in the investigative stage. Clients are placed with a lead attorney who works with specialists at each stage to provide advice and advocacy that fits the client’s changing needs while being sensitive to the political and economic pressures that influence government decision-making.

“Government policies and regulations shape the business environment and can have an enormous impact on an entity’s success. By drawing on the expertise of our skilled business and litigation attorneys, as well as our highly-respected government relations experts, this new practice group will offer a unique approach to identifying risks and opportunities for clients, and to shaping legislation, policy and government decisions to our client’s advantage,” shared McGee. “I am honored to be named Co-Chair of this group and excited to serve clients in this way.”

“Regulatory enforcement at all levels of government has been increasing for a number of years,” added Newman. “Tonkon has dozens of attorneys with significant experience in dealing with the government, including in stressful investigations and, when necessary, litigation over government overreach. We are taking clients from the beginning of the policy life-cycle through rulemaking, to enforcement response and litigation – all in a one-stop shop. I am so happy to help lead the group into the future so Tonkon is the place where folks in Oregon can go when dealing with the government.”

Maureen McGee has an extensive background in Oregon legislative-level matters. In her nine years serving Oregon lawmakers, most recently as a Senior Deputy Legislative Counsel, Maureen provided nonpartisan, policy-neutral legal advice and legislative drafting services to the 90 members of the Oregon Legislative Assembly. Maureen assists trade associations, governments, private organizations of all sizes, and citizens groups in such matters as policy development and drafting, engaging in the initiative process, direct government relations, and administrative advocacy and counsel.

Danny Newman’s experience includes responding to and managing high-stakes investigations by various state and federal agencies of individuals, companies, and elected officials. He has successfully negotiated resolutions for challenges to ballot titles, recall petitions, and high-profile government ethics administrative proceedings.
